A Founding Parent’s Journey: Fifteen Years at Dulwich College Seoul
In this special testimonial, founding parent JW Hyun reflects on her family’s fifteen-year journey with Dulwich College Seoul, from the College’s opening in 2010 through to both of her children graduating and moving on to university.
JW’s family joined the College at its very beginning, when it was still a small and developing school community. Seeking a British education that would instil strong values alongside academic learning, she recalls being struck by the commitment and energy of the teachers and leadership team during those early years.
As one of the founding families, JW describes feeling a genuine sense of partnership with the College, participating in the growth of both the school and its community. These early experiences shaped what would become a defining feature of their time at Dulwich College Seoul: a strong sense of belonging.
Both of JW’s children grew up at the College, supported by teachers who knew them well as individuals. She reflects on how the school encouraged independence, initiative, and respect for others, particularly when engaging with different opinions and perspectives. This balance between academic rigour and personal development, she notes, helped prepare her children to adapt confidently to new environments beyond school.
JW also shares how the College recognised and nurtured her children’s individual strengths, sometimes before the family themselves realised them. From discovering a passion for music composition to encouraging a deep interest in Mathematics, she credits the school with creating opportunities for exploration and growth that allowed both children to thrive.
Today, both of JW’s children are studying at Columbia University. Her son Victor J., former Head Student and a Class of 2022 graduate, is currently completing his studies, with graduation expected in 2026. Her daughter Claire J., Class of 2024, is also studying at Columbia University and is expected to graduate in 2028.
Looking back, JW speaks warmly about the relationships formed over the years, describing the College community as an extended family. Many of her children’s closest friendships, as well as their connections with teachers, remain strong to this day.
Reflecting on the College’s fifteen-year journey and its anniversary theme, Transforming Tomorrow Together, JW expresses confidence in Dulwich College Seoul’s ability to continue evolving while remaining grounded in the values that have guided it since the beginning.
A thoughtful reflection on trust, continuity, and community, JW’s story captures what it truly means to grow together at Dulwich College Seoul.
