Dulwich College Seoul Shortlisted for British International School Awards 2018

Dulwich College Seoul has been shortlisted in the ‘Outstanding Teaching Initiative’ category of the British International School Awards. The British International School Awards were launched to recognise excellence, celebrate success and set benchmarks for best practice from around the world.

The nomination is in recognition of our initiative designed to change the delivery of our primary mathematics curriculum from traditional blocks of content to the spacing and interleaving (IL/SP) approach, based on the work by Robert Bjork of UCLA. By successfully implementing this approach, we have been able to create ‘desirable difficulties’ for our students. That is, students are systematically challenged to retrieve knowledge and skills in topics after a gap of a week. In essence, the IL/SP approach means we study 5 topics over 5 weeks, with one day assigned per week to each topic. This practice has developed long-term memory for the application of mathematical knowledge and generated many opportunities for the crossover of skills. Since we started this in March 2016, evidence from assessments and surveys have shown an increased confidence in applying mathematical principles and increased achievement.
