Gareth Thomas
Director of Technology, Computer Science Teacher
Gareth Thomas joined us from Wellington College Shanghai where he was a founding member of staff and Whole School Head of Computer Science for six years. Prior to this, he worked for seven years at Olchfa School, one of the leading state schools in Wales. Gareth is an advocate for using technology to enhance the learning experience and has run extracurricular classes in augmented reality, games and mobile applications development, and robotics to ignite a passion in his subject amongst his students and allow them to explore the boundaries of computer science beyond the traditional curriculum. He graduated from the University of Wales with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science and then went on to gain both an MA and MEd. Before embarking on a career in teaching, Gareth worked in the computer industry where he was the lead online applications developer for HBOS, one of UK’s major banks. Outside the classroom and in his spare time, Gareth enjoys watching and coaching sports as well as participating with his favourites being football, rugby and skiing. Over the past decade, he has led many college sports trips to a variety of events in Europe, Asia and North America. He previously coached the Wales U14s national champions in an international tournament against the other UK home nations in Scotland. Gareth is married to Jeong-Hyun who is a Teaching Assistant in the Primary School and they have two children attending Senior School.
